Em 2006, o arquipélogo de Kvarken foi o último patrimônio da humanidade finlandês escolhido pela Unesco. Nestas ilhas as terras estão emergindo do fundo do oceano e no futuro a Finlândia será um pouco maior. The Kvarken archipelago was the lastest finnish Unesco WHS elected on 2006.
