From Évora, Pedro has sent me another amazing postcard. The city downtown still preserves the vestiges of several ancient civilizations and cultures (Celts, Romans, Arabs, Jews and ancient Christians) and in the15th century, it became the residence of the Portuguese royalty. And we know that the city's architecture influenced the constructions during Brazilian colonial era. The postcard depicts the Giraldo square and its famous fountain. Thank you, Pedro!

O Pedro enviou-me outro postal incrível, desta vez diretamente de Évora. A cidade ainda preserva, na sua área central, vestígios de várias civilizações e de culturas antigas (celtas, romanos, árabes, judeus e cristãos antigos) e, no século XV, ainda tornou-se residência da realeza portuguesa. E sabemos que a arquitetura da cidade influenciou bastante as construções durante o período do Brasil colonial. O cartão postal retrata a Praça do Giraldo e o seu famoso chafariz. In the 19th century, the Pena Palace, at Sintra, has become a major example of european romantic architecture. King Ferdinand II turned a ruined monastery into a summer palace using Gothic, Egyptian, Moorish and Renaissance elements and creating an immense garden that influenced the development of landscape architecture across Europe. The entire palace area has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. No século XIX, o Palácio da Pena, em Sintra, tornou-se um exemplo maior da arquitetura romântica europeia. o rei Fernando II transformou um mosteiro em ruínas em um palácio de verão com o uso de elementos góticos, egípcios, mouros e renascentistas e na criação de um imenso jardim que influenciaram o desenvolvimento da arquitetura paisagística em toda a Europa. Correios portugueses 500 anos / Portuguese Post office 500 years

Os Correios de Portugal distribuíram, gratuitamente, 2 milhões de selos postais aos seus clientes para celebrar os 500 anos da empresa. Com desenho do Professor João Machado, o selo presta homenagem à primeira emissão postal portuguesa, a famosa face da rainha Maria II, de 1853.

The Portuguese post office offered 2 million stamps, free of charge, to its customers to celebrate the 500th birthday of the company. The stamp was designed by Professor João Machado and it is a tribute to the first Portuguese postage stamp, the famous face of Queen Maria II, issued in 1853.

Mapas, política e pontinhos / Maps, politics and dots

Nada tão normal quanto celebrar um grande evento utilizando-se da emissão de um selo postal. Dito e feito, em 31 de janeiro de 2020, os Correios austríacos decidiram lançar um selo para marcar o Brexit, ou seja, a saída do Reino Unido (RU) da União Europeia (UE). Por humor, por antianglicismo ou mesmo por oportunismo econômico, nada foi esquecido pela Áustria no seu selo, o mapa da UE em azul escuro e do RU em azul claro, o quiprocó para definir a data definitiva da saída do RU do grupo (de 29/MAR/2019 para 31/JAN/2020), nem mesmo a ilha da Madeira foi ignorada no mapa (veja o pontinho azul no canto inferior esquerdo, no dente). Até o carimbo comemorativo de primeiro dia mostra a falta de uma das estrelas, símbolo da UE.

It is more than normal to celebrate a huge event issuing a postal stamp. In this way, on January 31st, 2020, the Austrian Post Office chose to issue a stamp to mark the Brexit, or, the withdrawal of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU). Sarcasm, anti-anglicism or even economic opportunism, nothing has been overlooked by Austria on its stamp. The EU map in dark blue and the UK in light blue, the British problems in defining the date of leaving the Union (from 29/MAR/2019 to 31/JAN/2020), not even the portuguese island of Madeira was ignored on the map (see the blue dot in the lower left corner). Even the commemorative first day postmark depicts the absence of one of the stars, a symbol of the EU.

O tempo passa, longos confinamentos devido à COVID-2019 e, em 2021, Portugal assume a presidência rotativa do Conselho da UE, o órgão dos representantes dos governos da UE que coordena as políticas do grupo. De certo modo, um grande evento, naturalmente, lançam-se selos e um bloco. Assim, novamente, um mapa azul escuro e azul claro mas, dessa vez, o RU dentro do selo, e o pontinho de Viena… fora. E no carimbo comemorativo, uma estrela, talvez a que caiu do carimbo austríaco do ano passado. 

Tudo é política ou ironia. Agora, nenhum pontinho de canto de folha para a ilha da Madeira…

Time goes by, long lockdowns due to COVID-19 and, in 2021, Portugal is in the presidency of the Council of the EU, an intergovernmental body whose members express and represent the position of their governments. Thus, a big event, of course, time to issue stamps and one miniature sheet. Then again, a dark blue and light blue map, but now, the United Kingdom inside the stamp and the Vienna dot... outside. And on the commemorative postmark, a star, perhaps the one that fell from last year's Austrian postmark.

Everything is politics or sarcasm. But now, not a single dot on the miniature sheet for the portuguese island of Madeira…

selo de cortiça - cork stamp

Como maior produtor de cortiça do mundo (mais de 50% da produção mundial), Portugal lançou, ontem, o primeiro selo feito a partir desse material. Serão emitidas cerca de 230 mil peças, cada uma com valor de um euro, nos Correios.As the biggest cork productor in the world (more than 50% of the worldwide production), Portugal issued, yesterday, the first stamp made of cork. Actually, 230,000 stamps issued and each one will cost one euro.
